Re:          Lions Clubs International Century of Service Commemorative Coin Act

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

On behalf of Lions Clubs International, I am delighted to report that Congressman Peter Roskam (R-IL) has agreed to introduce the "Lions Clubs International Century of Service Commemorative Coin Act," a non-partisan bill to direct the US Mint to strike a $1.00 US currency coin commemorating the 100th anniversary of Lions Clubs International while highlighting the history and accomplishments of LCI with the proceeds of coin sales benefiting the visually impaired, disabled, youth and those affected by disaster. The bi-partisan bill has over a dozen original co-sponsors including the following Lions in Congress: Larry Kissell (D-NC); Grace Napolitano (D-CA); Jo Bonner (R-AL); Howard Coble (R-NC); Steve Stivers (R-OH); Jim Gerlach (R-PA); GT Thompson (R-PA). Lion Jerry Moran (R-KS) has agreed to be a leading sponsor on the Senate side.

The bill will be introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives the first week of May and requires 290 co-sponsors and the Senate requires 67 co-sponsors for passage so we are asking you to:

  • Contact your member of Congress and ask him/her to co-sponsor the bill
  • Mobilize Lions in your district to contact their member of Congress and ask him/her to cosponsor the bill

We have enclosed a mobilization kit to assist with your outreach efforts:

  • A copy of a letter to send or e-mail your member of Congress (the preferred method in which your club secretary can put on letterhead), or
  • A copy of a letter to fill-in the blanks and send it to your member
  • A list of congressional members and contact information in your districts

New York has a Lion from every congressional district so we have an amazing opportunity to have every New York House member (29) and Senate member (2) as a co-sponsor to our bill. Let's show the other 49 states that New York Lions will be the first to achieve its goal! Your support and mobilization efforts are vital to our success and moving the bill to President Obama's desk for his signature.

To find your member of Congress, go to www.house.gov/ and enter for your zip at the upper left hand corner of the page. If you have any questions or feedback from your member of Congress, please do not hesitate to contact me at 630-926-8126.

April 2011

Dear Congressman _________________________:

On behalf of the _________________________ Lions Club, District 20, and the 15,298 Lions in New York, I respectfully request that you co-sponsor the Lions Clubs International Century of Service Commemorative Coin Act, sponsored by Congressman Peter Roskam (R, IL-6) and Congressman Larry Kissell (D, NC-8), celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Lions Clubs International in 2017.

The passage of the commemorative coin legislation not only highlights a century of service to people in need, but it would raise critical resources for ongoing Lions programs for the visually impaired, disabled, youth and those affected by a major disaster.

Lions Clubs International has 1.35 million members in 206 countries and geographic areas. In addition to its efforts toward conquering blindness, the organization has made a strong commitment to community service and helping youth throughout the world.

We would appreciate your co-sponsorship of the Lions Clubs International Century of Service Commemorative Coin Act. If you have any questions regarding this legislation, please feel free to contact me at _________________________.

Sincerely,

Name:              _________________________
