Lion Curtis Schmitt to be awarded Honorary Patriot Award on June 29th

On Monday June 29th, Lion Curtis (Curt) Schmitt will be awarded an Honorary Patriot Award at a dinner in the Woodbury Country Club. The Honorary Patriot Award is awarded to an individual who is representative of the spirit and lives of the five Seaford High School alumni who were lost on September 11, 2001.  They are:

Thomas Haskell ‘82

Timothy Haskell ‘85

John Perry ‘82

Robert Sliwak ‘77

 Michael Wittenstein ‘85

The Honorary Patriot Award recipient can be an individual who has made significant contributions to the Seaford Community or Schools; an individual who is a Seaford graduate who has gained distinction or an individual who has made a significant contribution to society.  Curt qualifies under all three criteria.

Curt is a lifelong resident of Seaford and a 1983 graduate of Seaford High School. He went on to graduate from C.W. Post College in 1987. He then attended the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service in Manhattan and graduated in 1989. In 1991, he joined the family business (Charles G. Schmitt Funeral Home Inc.) as a 4th generation funeral director, later becoming manager and administrator.

Curt is an active member in the Seaford community and is current president of the Seaford Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Seaford Lions Club and has been co-chair of the Seaford Lions Golf outing for the last several years.  Curt’s father Charles is a forty year member of the Seaford Lions Club.

He was instrumental in accomplishing Seaford's downtown revitalization which included new lighting, brickwork, our Welcome to Seaford signs and Seaford's holiday lighting along with Seaford's first 9/11 Memorial Kiosk which was dedicated in'September2002.  He's always been supportive of local community organizations, including Seaford Little League, Long Island Broncos (coach), Wantagh/Seaford PAL Lacrosse (coach) along with being an active member of the Wantagh/Seaford chapter of SPLASH organization (Stop Po1luting Littering and Save our Harbors)

Curt has never hesitated in contributing his time and expertise with his involvement in these organizations which shows a true testament on his belief in giving back to the community. He was honored as Grand Marshall in Seaford's 2008 homecoming parade.  This article previously appeared on this webpage. He is married to Kathy. He has two children Christiana 11 and Gregory 9. His strong values, faith and love for the community describe his character. He always takes that extra step in doing the "right thing" to get the job done, no matter how large or small the task.
