District 20 K-2 Lions Haitian Earthquake
Relief Response
To All
Clubs,
I have spoken to our District Coordinator for LCIF, PDG Norm
Alpren, regarding our participation in the Haitian relief effort
being done by our own foundation. He suggested after
conferring with Past International President Al Brandel who is
now the Chairman of LCIF worldwide, that each Club donate a
suggested amount of $250.00 or more to LCIF. This money
will be earmarked for the Haitian Relief effort only. Your
individual club will NOT be credited for Melvin Jones plaques.
PDG Norm asked that you mail your checks to him so they can be
sent in together to show that our District is in full support of
the effort being made by LCIF to help Haiti. Right now the
effort is being coordinated through the Lions in the Dominican
Republic. Past President Al reported that 3500 large tents
that we store in a warehouse in Sweden are being shipped as we
speak as well as water and food. Plans are being made for
schools and Hospitals to be set up and manned long after the
initial relief has gone from Haiti. We are in this for the long
run and the people there are desperate for our help. As we did
in China and the Asian relief the Lions of the World helped
continuously on a day to day basis, so our donations for this
effort will be needed for quite some time.
As many of you now know we have a new branch club out of the
Franklin Square Lions. It is the Long Island Haitian Lions Club.
I have spoken to their President Fritz Mesadieu and he informs
me that all the members of his family in Haiti are safe and all
the other members' families he reports are safe. Their major
problem is that they are living in the street and are in need of
food and water. He will let me know if he or the other members
have any needs that our District can be of help for them.
