Below is a photograph and program from Guiding Eyes for the Blind’s ribbon cutting ceremony for the onsite veterinarian MRI. The ceremony took place on July 18, 2009 during Salute to the Lions. The purchase of the MRI was made possible through a $75,000 Lions Club International Foundation grant. This grant, with contributions made by over 100 individual Lions Clubs including the Long Island Portuguese Lions Club; Oyster Bay Lions Club; Franklin Square Lions Club; Jericho Brookville Lions Club; Rockville Center Lions Club and other private donors, made it possible for Guiding Eyes to purchase an MRI for our veterinary hospital.
The onsite MRI helps Guiding Eyes’ veterinarians to more accurately diagnose and treat our dogs’ medical conditions. Guiding Eyes for the Blind is the only guide dog school in the world to have an onsite MRI machine. District Governors Cliff Young (20-O), Cary Smolens (20-R1), Lorri Kerzner (20-S, not pictured), and PDG Karl Walburg (20-R1 not pictured), joined Van Tassell Society Chairman, Angelo Purcigliotti, Guiding Eyes graduate and employee, Becky Barnes and Flyer, Guiding Eyes veterinarian Dr. Jodi Sandler, and Guiding Eyes Chief Executive Officer William Badger for the dedication.
Guiding Eyes for the Blind, founded in 1954, is a leading guide dog training school, dedicated to enriching the lives of blind and visually impaired men and women by providing them with the freedom to travel safely, assuring greater independence, dignity and new horizons of opportunity. Guiding Eyes makes a lifetime pact with our graduates to provide follow-up services and guidance, so that our “teams” achieve increased freedom, improved safety, and independence. Our students come from all over the United States and the world. Guiding Eyes’ Headquarters and Training Center is in Yorktown Heights, NY, and its renowned Canine Development Center is in Patterson, NY. 0A
